お正月早々、米国からニュースが・・・
ノースウェスタン大学の「境を越える想像力」プロジェクトが拡大され、
日本語版のページもできたそうです。
差出人の Laura Hein さんは古い友だちです。
ノースウェスタン大学（シカゴ）の教授で、日本史を担当。
なんというか、考え方や体温？がよく似ているというか、
互いに一家を訪問したり、高尾山や谷根千を歩いたり、
貴重な付き合いが続いています。
その上、多読に共感してくれて、NPOの準会員でもあります。
今回のお知らせは、日本でも米国でも人と人を分断する傾向が強まっている中、
あらゆる境を越えようとする4人の視覚芸術家の作品を紹介しています。
外国語を身に着けるとさまざまな扉が開きますが、すべて自分以外の人と
つながることだとも言えます。その意味で、このプロジェクトの題名
「境を越える想像力」はわたしたちと同じ方向を目指していると言えるかも
しれません。

I’d like to announce the redesign and expansion of the Imagination Without Borders project at Northwestern University, now live at http://imaginationwithoutborders.northwestern.edu/. さらに日本語版のページも併記しました。
“Imagination Without Borders” は画家の富山妙子、丸木俊・位里、そしてエレノア・ルービンの作品を紹介するホームページです。この四人の芸術家はその作品で政治的問題を扱い、美術を通して社会的な不正義の所在を主張しています。四人共第二世界大戦に影響され、戦争が社会にもたらす悲劇を伝えています。このウェブサイトは2010年に制作されましたが、富山妙子とエレノア・ルービンはその後も新しい絵を描き続けています。2011年には日本の東北地方で地震、津波、そして福島原発事故という三重の災害が起こり、そのことは彼女たちの新しい作品作りに結果しました。このサイトには、それら新しい作品を含むページを加え、さらに日本語版のページも併記しました。http://imaginationwithoutborders.northwestern.edu/about-jp/
The site was created in collaboration with scholars, artists, and translators from around the world and builds off the amazing work that was done several years ago in the Library Technology Division and Digital Collections for the first iteration of the website. The new website, created by Josh Honn, also uses the University’s WordPress and the Library’s Audio/Video Repository for better sustainability, faculty ownership, and future updates. My thanks to everyone who participated.
On the new website you will find a totally new design, new collections of art from Tomiyama Taeko, new writing about her work, new videos and artists portraits, and, best of all, the site is now bilingual, in both English and Japanese!
This artist, now 95 years old and still active as an artist and public intellectual, reminds us that it is always worth it to be honest with ourselves about who is valued in our societies–and who is not. And she does it so eloquently too….

In the arenas that shape international public opinion, Japanese are frequently charged with being unusually unwilling to admit the harm that their wartime state policies caused to others. Yet making this accusation requires looking comparatively; are the Japanese really so much worse at confronting their own ugly past actions than everyone else? Regrettably, such comparisons show that most governments and societies find this an extremely difficult task.
わたしなりの解釈をすると、「社会的不正義のそしりを免れる国はない」
ということだと思います。よその国の悪口ばかり言うが、自分の国は
どうなんだ？と。どこの国の手も汚れている－－皮肉なことに、
その意味でも「境はない」わけです。
ただし、「悪いのは日本だけではない」からといって、
悪かった過去をなしにすることはできません。
各国とも「悪い過去」を抱えている・・・ そこから少々飛躍すると、
国というまとまりそのものを疑ってかかる必要がありそうです。
ことばは「他人」とつながるためにあり、
ことばを獲得することは、国をはじめとするさまざまな境を越えようと
する試みだろうと思います。
